A person has a million reasons as to why he or she can be anxious and there isn’t a single human being on this planet, who hasn’t ever experienced anxiety. Just because a person becomes anxious or panics about a situation, he or she isn’t weak or without confidence. People can become anxious before an exam, an interview, before an important meeting or while making important life altering decisions. However, when the anxiety reaches a level where the affected person can’t function properly and carry out their day to day tasks, that’s when it becomes a problem that needs to be immediately addressed. Anxiety, in general, occurs due to imbalances in the chemicals in the brain and events that can trigger anxiety are plenty which needs to be analyzed in depth.
Types of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety Disorder is a broad term that refers to a number of differing disorders namely panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias pertaining to specific places, events or people and generalized anxiety disorder. Causes for each of them may vary and anxiety treatment methods will certainly vary between them as well. Understanding about each type of disorder is essential to know what needs to be done to overcome them.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
When a person always worries or feels anxious about things that haven’t happened or is likely to happen, or excessively worries about unrealistic, improbable scenarios, without any actual event to trigger the nervousness and anxiety, he or she is said to be suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Exaggerations are common among sufferers of generalized anxiety disorder and they can always be seen expecting some sort of negative events or disasters to strike anytime.
Social Anxiety Disorder
When an individual worries about engaging in social events or finds it very discomforting to be in public places where they have to interact with a lot of other people, they are said to have Social Anxiety Disorder. This is otherwise called a social phobia and the affected individual is very conscious of how they are and what others might think of them. Their concerns are overwhelming and to abnormal levels.
Those with panic disorder tend to have panic attacks which are nothing but periods of intense fear or feelings that something calamitous can happen anytime. These panic attacks are episodic in nature and can occur anytime anywhere, which on its own can make the sufferer remain anxious all the time. Panic attacks can usually last up to ten minutes and the sufferers might have issues with breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, dizziness, excessive perspiration and overall shaking of the body. Chills, a sense of choking and chest pain are also noticed with them, along with more than normal levels of fear.
When an object or event can create intense fear in a person, that person is said to have a phobia towards that specific object or event. Phobias are numerous and psychiatric therapy is mostly recommended for them to overcome those phobias. Fear of spiders, heights, depth of the sea, are all some examples of phobias.
